26-09-24 Homer is the sweetest boy who has come to us from his breeder to find his forever home. As he is quite worried at the moment, he will be looking for an adult only home. When he was young he suffered from a condition called puppy strangles which causes skin swelling and scabs all over his little face. He still has a little hair loss and scarring from this and his ears are thickened and his eyes are droopy but he must be feeling so much better already. He is a worried but gentle little fellow who needs a little time to warm up to you when he first meets you. Once he is in your arms he does settle and will begin to relax. This chap will need some practice being fussed and as he is young we hope it wont be too long until he is enjoying it and discovering his puppy side! He loves to lie with his friends under a heat lamp. He will need a kind resident dog to lend him some confidence and show him new skills like house training and how to walk on a lead. He will need heaps of socialisation and training to help him become the best he can be and will be so much fun if given the time and patience he needs to begin to bloom.

Homer is an incredibly sweet and handsome boy who is trying his hardest to be brave. Homer is still trying to get used to us and is slowly starting to understand we are not scary, though his confidence grows more when influenced by his outgoing kennel pals. I sat in Homer’s kennel for a while with him and his kennel friend, and after a few minutes Homer approached me and sniffed my hands before eventually taking a few treats. Homer is just so scrumptious and seeing him curl into bed makes me hope and imagine that soon it’ll be in his own bed (or his adopters!) Homer relies a lot on other dogs so will definitely need to be homed with at least one kind resident dog and would be looking for an adult only home. Being a puppy Homer would need to learn the basics of home life too. He has a whole world to discover, but he needs his people to show him . Hopefully this handsome chap is waiting to long for his forever home! He really is a sweetheart!

Homer’s progress has been slow and steady here at the rescue and even though his confidence is improving, I can’t help but think he would do a LOT better in a home environment. He’s still definitely very wary of humans and will still only approach me for a little sniff and to take treats from me, but I do think he’ll come around with the more time I spend with him. One thing that has changed over the past couple of weeks is that his playful side has been well and truly been released!!!! He now absolutely LOVES to run around and play with his kennel friends both in the yard, and in his kennel too. Every time I can hear a kerfuffle it’s always him and one of his kennel friends having a wrestle .. it’s so funny! He’s also started taking interest in toys which is very sweet. One thing we have come to discover is that Homer is very uncomfortable being carried and he will panic and sometimes try to bite. Because of this, I’m going to start harness training with him so he can be walked around instead of carried. I’m hoping he’ll take to it well if I use one of his confident kennel friends to help, and also yummy treats too! This doesn’t make him a bad dog in any way, he’s obviously just not used to being carried and it’s scary for him .. so please don’t let this put you off him. He’s such a sweetheart in his own little way, and just needs to be given a chance.

I always find with the scared dogs, the more time you spend with them the more comfortable they are with being in your presence, and then this helps massively with things such as harness training, being groomed etc. A couple of weeks ago I did take Homer into the grooming room to give him a sort of introductory’ hair cut. He didn’t have a clue what was going on bless him, but he did okay for his first time. I shaved his belly and the feathers on his legs as he kept getting very wet in all the rain we’ve been having. He seemed fine with all of this, but did not appreciate his feet being done … but in all honesty, no dogs like their feet being done!!!
Please read our information on ADOPTING EX-BREEDING DOGS before you apply.
PLEASE NOTE: We nearly always home dogs who have come from breeders where there is ALREADY A RESIDENT DOG living in the house. They have usually never lived in a house before and are only used to canine company. They usually get their confidence and learn faster with another dog to copy from. This also helps with house training and learning how to walk on a lead. They will make lovely pets but do need a lot of love, time and patience. If the ex breeding dog you are interested in can be an only dog it will say so in its write up. Please read our information on ADOPTING EX-BREEDING DOGS before you apply.
