ABOUT US
Many Tears Animal Rescue (MTAR) is based in Carmarthenshire, Wales but has dogs in foster homes throughout the UK. We take in and rehome primarily ex-breeding dogs who are no longer required; those on "death row" in the pounds and those whose owners are no longer able to keep them.
We are a unique rescue in that the majority of our dogs are ex-breeders and many have never seen the outside world before. With the help of our staff, fosterers and other volunteers we provide a special and loving environment to help all our dogs adapt and find permanent, loving new homes. All potential adopters are interviewed and homes vetted and we do our utmost best to find the right home for each dog. The rescue has grown considerably since it first opened and now homes in excess of 3,000 dogs a year.
All our dogs are spayed/neutered, micro chipped, inoculated and wormed but in addition to this we get many dogs in need of specialist veterinary care. Some of the most frequent problems we encounter are dogs who arrive here with eye and heart problems, along with those with liver shunts and joint problems. Any treatment is required is financed by donations to the rescue which enable us to ensure each dog receives the specialist care it needs.
Our History
In 2004 Sylvia and Bill Van Atta bought a property called Cawdor Kennels in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The previous owners had a yard with kennels used for show dogs and they used these kennels to open their new rescue called Many Tears Animal Rescue. Originally the rescue was set up as a Not For Profit Company but in November 2020 Many Tears Animal Rescue became a registered charity. (No: 1192227).
Both Sylvia and Bill have a long history of animal rescue - particularly Sylvia who has set up and worked in rescues in both the UK and USA. They have witnessed many sad situations and shed many tears over dogs in terrible situations and hence the name Many Tears Animal Rescue.
Although Many Tears is based in Wales it has dogs in foster homes throughout the UK. We take in and rehome ex-breeding dogs, those from pounds, others whose owners are no longer able to keep them and, when we have space, we help rescues overseas
Our Mission
Many Tears' mission is to offer a safe haven to any dog in need of help and a safe place to stay no matter where it has come from. They will stay in our care, no matter how long that may be, until a wonderful forever home is found and takes them home. As well as dogs who are surrendered to us from homes, this includes those who have been abandoned, neglected and mistreated. We work tirelessly to ensure each arrival is treated with the respect it deserves and ensure it receives whatever medical and rehabilitation care it needs.
At Many Tears we absolutely believe that every animal deserves to be treated with respect, love and kindness. They should be able to live free from pain, fear and distress of any kind and from the moment they enter our gates that this is what we do for them. For many of the dogs who arrive here this is very often the first time they have ever experienced gentle hands and loving hearts and our dedicated staff and volunteers do everything they can to start to help them believe that the world can be a good place and that they are loved. Although we are primarily a dog rescue, our promise to every animal who comes through our doors is that they will get all the love, care and attention they deserve and that this is their first stepping stone to their new life. Many Tears will never put an animal to sleep unless we are absolutely compelled to due to a significant medical reason.
