16-04-24 Nelly is a sweet but scared girl who has come from her breeder to find a loving home. She is a very nervous girl who hasn't seen anything of the world before so feels very overwhelmed. She is skittish and shies away at noises and movement so could be a flight risk and so will need a secure home and garden where she can be safe and begin to relax. She gets on great with other dogs and will look to them for support so will need a kind dog in her new home to help her settle and start to learn all about home life. She has never lived indoors so will need to learn skills such as house training and how to walk on a lead as well as get used to the sights and sounds of home.
Nelly isn't familiar with being handled but does seem to enjoy a gentle scratch under the chin but in general the thought of being handled sends her diving to the back of her kennel to hide from us. She will need an experienced adopter who can give her all the kindness, encouragement and support that she needs to help her leave her fears behind and begin to enoy her new way of life. She will need a calm adult only home where she can get plenty of exercise and physical stimulation. In time she will thrive. She cannot live with cats or small furries.

Nelly is the epitome of a loyal soul, she is nervous with new people but once she trusts you she is always by your side, preferably with her head touching your leg.
She walks on a harness and slip lead well, shares beds and will share food but isn't keen on it. She is a typical ex-farm collie and will require a working collie experienced home as if she is placed in to the wrong situation she could easily find ways to entertain herself that her new humans do not like.
She will also require and adult only home with no visiting children as she has shown some herding behaviour here and can be barky at new people that she finds intimidating. In the right home, this girl will be exceptional as she is super smart and very loving with her people.

To put it simply, I am absolutely besotted. Although Nelly has been here at the rescue since April, this is the first week that I have consistently worked on the section where she is kennelled, so have had the chance to spend quality time with her and discovered she is truly an absolute sweetheart. She was hesitant with me to start with and would shy away from me when approached, but with some persistence and patience, within 2 days she trusted me enough to let me fuss her! It was such a wonderful feeling seeing her barriers come down, knowing that she now felt safe in my presence.
We are now at the end of the week and she has progressed leaps and bounds with me! She gets so excited when she sees me now, and has the waggiest little tail! As I enter the kennel she will now approach me very sweetly to ask for a fuss and will roll onto her back for belly rubs! Nelly has fully captured my heart within mere days ofworking with her and she just needs adopters who understand her breed and accept her initial hesitations.
Once she trusts you she is the sweetest, most loyal companion you could wish for! I REALLY hope she gets adopted soon as she deserves all of the belly rubs in the world! She really is just an apprehensive girl that truly wants to be loved so desperately.

Nelly is doing very well here in kennels and really adores her routine and her chosen people. She still needs a collie experienced home who will understand what she needs to thrive and how to manage her breed specific behaviours. She needs a cat free home, with no small furries of any kind. She will also try to herd horses. She is super loving with her people and does listen, she knows the name Nelly and she will come to it. She is good with all other dogs, although she seems to adore other collies and beagles best. She will make someone very lucky, but the home has to be right

Nelly had a go in the agility yard today and I don't think she has the makings of an agility champion.
She would much rather just roll over for belly rubs and have a mooch around. This girl will need an adult only home, but in the right one, she will make a wonderful best friend.

Nelly is a very affectionate loving collie! Although quite timid when you first meet Nelly, once you get to know her and gain her trust, she’s such a good girl with a heart of gold! Being your typical collie, Nelly is looking for a home that can pour plenty of attention and time into her, paired with plenty of exercise, walks and mental stimulation!
Nelly, as mentioned is initially very shy, so don’t be upset if she doesn’t warm up to you instantly, but with time and effort Nelly could easily be your best friend! Nelly would need to be homed with at least one other dog with an owner who is very much collie experienced to help handle her nervous nature.
I believe that Nelly, under the care of someone experienced would settle in to a new home setting fairly quickly as long as there is plenty of affection, attention and a loving family to care for her and nurture her.

I'd like to tell you all Nellys story as I think it's one that's worth sharing. I remember the day that Nelly arrived at the rescue, she was brought down to my section by a very experienced member of staff and put straight in to a kennel with a few other dogs. This kennel is called Field 3 and for those that don't know, each section has the kennels numbered so we can locate which dog is where, kennels can be different sizes and the amount of dogs in each kennel varies for different reasons.
Well, F3 as we call it, is quite a large kennel and usually has anywhere between 4 to 7 dogs in it. When Nelly was placed in there with the other dogs, she immediately went to hide, she made herself as small as she could as she did not want me to even look at her. I went in a few times to just be near her that day and she would do anything she could to keep away from me. It broke my heart. Nelly has obviously been a farm collie, I could tell that the moment I met her, but as time has gone on it's become more and more obvious for different reasons that I shall get to in a little while.
When we started to yard Nelly, she would pace the perimeter of the yard looking for a way out before realising she couldn't find one and then she would hide under a bench for the whole time she was out. Getting her in was not easy either, it would take three of us to guide her back to her kennel, until she picked up the routine and started to associate her kennel with safety, once she'd made that association she'd run straight back in. All of this is me trying to paint the picture of the girl who first arrived, and I know it may sound like she had been mistreated, but I'm not actually sure she was. Collies that are used to farm life and being out and about so much of their days, they just really don't know how to cope with being caged. I feel this was the case for Nelly, her whole life had been flipped upside down and she'd ended up in a place that's the polar opposite of what she had been used to, so many strange people, so many dogs, not as much space to run, so much noise and stimulation, but no actual work or job to do. For a collie, that is not a mix that helps them thrive.
As time went on and we poured our hearts in to trying to help Nelly feel more confident, she did start to show us some love, it started with a little chin scratch but soon progressed in to full belly rubs. Only with the people she knew very well though, other staff members were given a wide-berth and avoided as much as possible. The reason I mention F3 is because that was the first kennel she was placed in and that is the kennel she remains in today, her kennel friends have come and gone ten times over during her five month stay, but she has welcomed every new friend and made new play friends each and every time. She snuggles with the sassy Frenchie and cockers that are currently in with her and she plays with her boyfriend, the very handsome Rob Roy. She has play dates down the big yard with other dogs from different sections too. She is probably the most well socialised dog in the rescue at this point, but still she waits.
As her confidence has grown and she has met more and more people, she has started to ask for fusses from them quicker and quicker, even rolling over for belly rubs within five minutes of meeting some of the new male staff members. This has made my heart burst with pride for her, every time I see it I just remember that dog that arrived so desperate to avoid every one and everything, the girl who didn't even want me to look at her. She has even started going for two long walks a week with a lovely male volunteer who has been coming for years. He says she is a very good girl when out. The reasons I think Nelly has been used as a working farm collie are things such as; Her herding instinct is very high, especially with any sort of larger animal, if she sees a horse then she wants to herd them. She jumps in to my car very happily and enthusiastically. She has also tried to jump on the back of the quad bike a few times. She is exceptionally smart and likes to please you.
Although Nelly is still looking for a collie experienced home that can safely introduce her to new people and never put her in a situation that she will fail in, as well as stimulating her mind and giving her an adequate amount of exercise. She will make the most exceptional dog in the right home and I am hoping that her wait has just helped her be set up to succeed in home life.
Nelly does still require a home with no small furries or cats and no children. Her ideal home would be a quiet rural set up with either one or two adults who can love and cherish her for the rest of her days, which I hope are full of nothing but the best things as she truly deserves to be the apple of someone's eye. Nelly does know her name and responds well to it, she even has good recall in our safe enclosed large play area.
Please read our information on ADOPTING EX-BREEDING DOGS before you apply.
PLEASE NOTE: We nearly always home dogs who have come from breeders where there is ALREADY A RESIDENT DOG living in the house. They have usually never lived in a house before and are only used to canine company. They usually get their confidence and learn faster with another dog to copy from. This also helps with house training and learning how to walk on a lead. They will make lovely pets but do need a lot of love, time and patience. If the ex breeding dog you are interested in can be an only dog it will say so in its write up. Please read our information on ADOPTING EX-BREEDING DOGS before you apply.
