Adoption Shopping List

When preparing to adopt a dog, it's important to have the necessary supplies to ensure their comfort and well-being. Here's a shopping list of essential items for dog adoption:

  1. Collar and harness: Choose a collar or harness that fits your dog properly (if your dog is in a foster home their fosterer will advise whether the dog is more comfortable on a harness). If adopting allow space for growth and comfort.
  2. Ensure you have identification tags with your contact information: By law you should have at least your surname, house number/name, postcode and a phone number on the ID tag. All Many Tears dogs are microchipped and we will transfer this to your details after adoption.
  3. Lead: Select a sturdy lead suitable for your dog's size and strength, if you are adopting a scared dog we also advise you have a slip lead with a rubber stopper.
  4. Food and water bowls: Invest in durable, non-slip bowls for food and water. Stainless steel or ceramic bowls are usually the hardest wearing.
  5. Dog food: Choose an age and size appropriate dog food, we advise you to continue feeding your dog Arden Grange at least while they are settling in and you will receive a 2kg bag in your adoption pack.
  6. Treats: Treats are useful for training, rewarding good behavior, and bonding with your dog. Arden Grange make Tasty Pastes which is a favourite with the dogs here at the centre, it can persuade even the most scared dogs to come and investigate.
  7. Dog bed or crate: Provide a comfortable and cosy space for your dog to rest and sleep. Consider a bed or a crate, depending on your dog's preferences and training needs. We recommend Susan Garrett's Crate Games if you want to crate train your new dog.
  8. Toys: Dogs need mental and physical stimulation. Get a variety of toys, such as chew toys, interactive toys, and puzzle toys, to keep your dog entertained and engaged.
  9. Grooming supplies: Depending on your dog's coat type, you may need grooming supplies like a brush or comb, nail clippers and bathing supplies. Regular grooming helps keep your dog clean and healthy.
  10. Poo bags: Responsible dog ownership includes picking up after your dog. Stock up on poo bags for walks and outings.
  11. Dog-specific cleaning supplies: Accidents happen, so have pet-friendly cleaning supplies on hand to clean up messes effectively.

Remember, this list is a general guide, and the specific items you need may vary depending on your dog's breed, size, and individual needs. Once you bring your new dog home, you can continue to assess their needs and acquire additional supplies as necessary.
